Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about walking routes and accessibility across Latvia's most scenic destinations
Yes, the Daugava embankment paths are primarily paved and flat, making them ideal for seniors. The main promenade stretches about 10 kilometers along Riga's right bank with consistent terrain and plenty of benches for rest stops every 200-300 meters. You'll find accessible public restrooms and cafés along the route, so you can take breaks whenever you need them.
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are perfect for Jūrmala walks—the weather's mild, crowds are smaller than summer, and the forest paths are beautiful. Winter's quieter too if you enjoy crisp air and fewer tourists, though you'll want proper footwear for potentially icy sections.
The canal area is easily accessible by tram—lines 1, 2, and 11 run close to the Old Town canal routes. Most stops have level boarding or gentle ramps, and you can hop off at Kronvalda Park or near the Bastion Hill for perfect canal-side walks. Buses also serve the area well if trams don't work for your route.
Most of the gentle countryside rambles in Vidzeme use gravel or dirt tracks that can be challenging with walkers or canes. However, we've identified several accessible routes near villages like Sigulda and Cēsis with maintained paths. Our detailed guides specify terrain type for each route so you can choose what works best for your mobility needs.
You can walk anytime—all the routes we cover are open to the public with no bookings required. That said, we recommend downloading our detailed guides before you go, since some countryside areas have spotty mobile reception. If you're planning a guided experience, some local tourism centers offer senior-friendly group walks that do need advance notice.
Each of our detailed route guides includes maps marking benches, cafés, restrooms, and water fountains. We've walked every route ourselves to confirm accessibility and comfort features. Visit our individual route pages for comprehensive facility information, photos, and tips from other seniors who've completed the walks.
